Ragdoll cat in Malaysia: price, care

A Ragdoll kitten in Malaysia costs about RM1,800 to RM3,500 from most sellers. On 22 October 2026, 215 priced listings on Mudah.my ran from RM300 to RM15,500, with a median of RM2,899. Pedigree papers, show-quality markings and parents tested for the HCM gene push the price to the top of that range. The Ragdoll is a large, calm, blue-eyed cat that is slow to mature, reaching full size at about four years. The main health check is a DNA test for the Ragdoll HCM gene, which Langford Vets finds in about 13% of the breed. The semi-long coat has little undercoat, so it sheds and mats less than a Persian. Comb it once or twice a week. At PGH in USJ 21, Subang Jaya, a basic groom for a long-coated cat under 5 kg is RM100 to 130, and a lion cut starts from RM180.

The cheapest ads are often mixes, adult cats being rehomed, or kittens without papers. A Ragdoll has a pointed coat, darker on the face, ears, legs and tail, and blue eyes. A kitten without both is not a Ragdoll, whatever the ad says. If a breeder says a kitten is pedigree, ask to see the registration and the parents' HCM results before you pay a deposit.

Are Ragdolls good pets?

For a calm home, yes. The Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) describes the breed as laid-back and docile, with an easy-care coat. The name comes from the first breeder's claim that the founding cat went limp when held.

That relaxed nature helps on the grooming table, but a Ragdoll is still a big cat. CFA says it is one of the larger breeds, with a broad chest and a long, muscular body, and a mature male can reach or exceed 20 pounds (about 9 kg). It is also slow to mature: full coat colour at about two years, full size and weight at about four. Most adult Ragdolls are over the 5 kg line in our price list, which is why we quote by weight.

What health problems do Ragdolls have?

The one to ask a breeder about is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a disease that thickens the heart muscle. Ragdolls have their own form, caused by a change in the MYBPC3 gene called R820W.

  • How common. Langford Vets at the University of Bristol estimates the gene is in about 13% of Ragdolls.
  • One copy or two. The UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory says cats with one copy are not likely to show signs and may live a normal lifespan. Cats with two copies are at high risk of severe HCM, usually showing signs between 1 and 2 years old.
  • What a test covers. The DNA test, a cheek swab, only finds this one gene. Other genes can also cause HCM, so a clear test lowers the risk without removing it. Ask your vet whether a heart scan suits your cat.

Ask the breeder for both parents' HCM DNA results. Two carriers bred together can produce kittens with two copies.

Do Ragdolls shed a lot in Malaysia?

Less than most long-haired breeds. CFA describes the coat as semi-long, with abundant guard hairs and minimal woolly undercoat, and says the lack of a thick undercoat reduces shedding and matting. Like all cats, Ragdolls still shed, and CFA notes this usually comes with the change of seasons.

From the grooming table, this is what that means in a Malaysian home:

  • Steady shedding. With no cold season and air-conditioned rooms, most indoor Ragdolls we see shed a little all year rather than in two big waves.
  • Knots in friction spots. The body coat stays fairly smooth, but tangles form where the coat rubs: behind the ears, in the armpits, on the belly and on the back of the hind legs. That is where to comb first.
  • Hair in the back end. The long hair on the back legs, the "britches", can trap litter and droppings. A sanitary trim keeps it clean.

If you see bald patches, broken hairs or red skin rather than an even shed, that is not normal shedding. See cat hair loss: shedding or a problem?

How often should you groom a Ragdoll?

CFA says regular combing at least once or twice a week with a steel comb will find and remove loose hair and tangles. What works on this coat:

  • A wide-and-fine steel comb, wide teeth first, then fine. Work behind the ears, under the legs and along the belly.
  • Gentle handling. A Ragdoll often relaxes if you comb it on your lap, supported, rather than on a table.
  • A professional groom every 6 to 8 weeks keeps the britches and belly tidy and the loose coat under control. Our schedule by coat type is in how often should cats be groomed?

Should you shave a Ragdoll?

Usually not for the heat. With little undercoat, a combed Ragdoll copes with indoor Malaysian conditions, and shaving exposes the skin and takes months to grow back.

A lion cut, where the body is clipped short and the head, legs and tail tip keep their length, does make sense for a Ragdoll that mats badly, an older cat that no longer grooms well, or an owner who cannot comb twice a week. At PGH it starts from RM180. If the coat is already matted close to the skin, a clip is kinder than combing it out.

How much does PGH charge to groom a Ragdoll?

A basic groom for a long-coated cat under 5 kg is RM100 to 130, and a kitten under 2 kg is RM60 to 80. Most adult Ragdolls are heavier than 5 kg, so send us your cat's weight and we will quote before you come in. The basic groom includes a massage bath, blow dry and full comb-out, nail trimming, ear cleaning, a sanitary shave and paw trimming. A lion cut starts from RM180. We never sedate, and a groom takes about two hours. Full prices are on the cat grooming page, and how we compare with other salons is in cat grooming prices in Malaysia.
