Cat hair loss: shedding or a problem?

Some hair loss is normal for every cat. Healthy cats shed old hair all the time, and indoor cats in Malaysia's warm weather and air-conditioned homes tend to shed all year rather than in one season. Normal shedding is even: you find hair on the sofa and the brush, but the coat stays full and the skin underneath is clean. Hair loss is not normal when you see bald or thin patches, scabs, redness, dandruff, broken hairs, or a cat licking one area again and again. The common causes are fleas and flea allergy, ringworm, over-grooming from stress or itch, and allergies. Less common causes include mites, an overactive thyroid in older cats, and pain. Brushing once or twice a week for short coats and daily for long coats removes most loose hair. Patchy loss needs a vet. In Subang Jaya, a PGH basic cat groom with full comb-out costs RM90 to 130.

This is general information from a grooming and boarding team, not veterinary advice. If your cat has bald patches, sores or a change in behaviour, see a vet.

How do I tell normal shedding from hair loss?

What you see Likely normal shedding See a vet
Hair on furniture and the brush Yes, if the coat looks full If you can see skin through the coat
Clumps when brushing a long coat Yes, loose undercoat If the skin under it is red or scabby
Thin or bald patch No Yes
Scabs, redness, dandruff or crusts No Yes
Cat licks or chews one spot a lot No Yes
Bald belly or inner thighs No Yes
Hair loss plus weight change, thirst or appetite change No Yes, soon

If you are not sure, take a clear photo of the area every few days. Your vet will find it useful.

Why do cats in Malaysia shed all year?

Outdoor cats in cooler countries grow a thick coat for winter and drop it in spring. Malaysia has no winter, and indoor cats live under artificial light and air conditioning, so their coat cycle never fully switches off. The result is steady shedding all year, with heavier spells now and then. That is normal. It just means brushing has to be a routine, not a seasonal job.

Long-haired cats such as Persians, Maine Coons and Ragdolls have a dense undercoat. If loose undercoat is not combed out, it packs down into mats close to the skin, which pull and can hide sores.

What causes bald patches on a cat?

  • Fleas and flea allergy. Thin fur, scabs and redness at the base of the tail and along the back. One bite is enough to trigger an allergic cat. See our cat flea guide.
  • Ringworm. Round or uneven patches with scaly skin and broken hairs, often on the head, ears and front legs. It spreads to people. See our cat ringworm guide.
  • Over-grooming. The cat licks the hair off, usually the belly, inner thighs or forelegs. The cause can be itch, stress (a move, a new pet, a new baby, a hotel stay) or pain.
  • Allergies to food, dust mites or pollen, often with itching around the face, ears and neck.
  • Mites, such as ear mites or skin mites, with itching and crusting.
  • Hormone and other illness, for example an overactive thyroid in older cats. These usually come with other signs such as weight loss, more thirst or more appetite.
  • After shaving. A shaved coat can take months to grow back fully. That is not hair loss, but tell your vet if the skin looks sore.

A vet works through these with a skin check, a flea comb, a UV lamp, skin scrapes or a fungal test.

How do I reduce shedding at home?

  1. Brush on a schedule. Short coats once or twice a week with a rubber brush or fine comb. Long coats every day, with a wide-toothed comb first and a finer one after.
  2. Comb to the skin. Brushing only the top layer leaves the undercoat to mat. Part the coat and work in small sections.
  3. Check the skin while you brush. It is the easiest way to spot fleas, scabs or a new patch early.
  4. Feed a complete cat food. A poor diet shows in a dry, dull coat. Ask your vet before adding supplements.
  5. Keep up flea prevention all year. Flea allergy is one of the most common reasons for hair loss.

Our guide on how often cats should be groomed gives a brushing schedule by breed.

Can a professional groom help with heavy shedding?

Yes, for normal shedding. A bath loosens dead undercoat, and a blow dry with a full comb-out lifts far more loose hair than home brushing. It does not cure hair loss caused by fleas, ringworm, allergy or illness. Those need a vet first.

Questions we get asked

Is it normal for my cat to shed a lot?

Yes, if the hair comes out evenly, the coat stays full and the skin underneath is clean. Indoor cats in Malaysia's warm climate and air-conditioned homes tend to shed all year rather than in one season. Bald patches, scabs or redness are not normal shedding.

Why is my cat losing hair in patches?

The most common causes are fleas or flea allergy, ringworm, over-grooming from stress or itch, and allergies to food or the environment. Mites, hormone problems and pain can also cause patches. A vet can find the cause with a skin check and simple tests.

Why does my cat have a bald belly?

A bald or thin belly and inner thighs usually means the cat is licking the hair off. Itch from fleas or allergies is the most common reason, followed by stress and pain, for example from a bladder problem. The skin often looks normal. See a vet to find the cause.

How often should I brush a cat that sheds a lot?

Short-haired cats: once or twice a week. Long-haired cats such as Persians: every day, with a wide-toothed comb first and then a finer one. Regular brushing removes loose undercoat before the cat swallows it, which also cuts down on hairballs.

Can a groom stop my cat shedding?

No groom stops shedding, but a professional bath and full comb-out removes a large amount of loose undercoat at once. At PGH a basic cat groom costs RM90 to 110 for a short coat and RM100 to 130 for a long coat, and includes a bath with massage, blow dry and full comb-out.
