Cat pregnancy week by week

A cat is pregnant for about 63 days counted from mating. Kittens born from day 58 to day 68 are normal. Cats can mate with more than one male in a heat, so the exact date is often unknown.

A heavily pregnant or nursing cat should stay home in familiar surroundings. If you need to travel, ask a friend to check on her at home rather than boarding her. Her other pets can stay at the PGH cat hotel.

Cat pregnancy week by week
WhenWhat happens
Weeks 1–2No visible signs. Feed and handle her as usual.
Week 3Nipples turn pink and larger (pinking up). Some cats eat less or vomit for a few days.
Weeks 3–4A vet can confirm pregnancy by ultrasound or by gently feeling the belly.
Weeks 5–6Belly visibly bigger, weight gain. Move her onto kitten food and let her eat as much as she wants.
Week 7Kittens may be felt moving. An X-ray from about day 45 can count them.
Weeks 8–9Nesting: she looks for a quiet, hidden spot. Set up a box with clean towels in a warm, quiet room.
Day 58–68Labour. She may stop eating, pant, purr or become restless about a day before.

Common questions

How many months is a cat pregnant?

About 2 months. Pregnancy in cats lasts 58 to 68 days, 63 days on average, which is about 9 weeks.

How can I tell if my cat is pregnant?

The first visible sign is pink, enlarged nipples at about 2 to 3 weeks. The belly grows from about week 5. A vet can confirm pregnancy by ultrasound from about day 21 or by feeling the belly from about day 20 to 30. There is no reliable home test for cats.

How many kittens will my cat have?

Usually 3 to 5, though first litters are often smaller. An X-ray after day 45 is the best way to count the kittens.

When should I call a vet?

If no kittens have arrived by day 68, if your cat strains for more than an hour without a kitten, if there is green or bloody discharge before the first kitten, or if she seems weak or in pain.

Should I neuter my cat after the kittens are born?

Ask your vet. Many vets spay a mother cat once the kittens are weaned at about 8 weeks. A cat can become pregnant again soon after giving birth.
