Maine Coon cat in Malaysia: price, care
Maine Coon kitten prices in Malaysia, how big they get, the HCM and hip tests to ask for, how to keep the shaggy coat free of mats in our heat, and PGH grooming prices.

A Maine Coon kitten in Malaysia costs about RM800 to RM3,000 from most sellers. On 22 October 2026, 268 priced listings on Mudah.my ran from RM300 to RM15,800, with a median of RM1,900. Many of the cheapest ads are mixes. Pedigree papers and parents tested for the HCM gene push the price to the top of that range. The Maine Coon is the largest pedigreed cat: a mature male can pass 9 kg, and the breed takes up to three years to reach full size. Ask the breeder for two results. One is a DNA test for the Maine Coon HCM gene, which Langford Vets finds in about 26% of the breed. The other is hip X-rays. The shaggy coat sheds and mats on the belly and back legs, so comb it two or three times a week. At PGH in USJ 21, Subang Jaya, we quote adult Maine Coon grooms by weight, and a lion cut starts from RM180.
PGH grooms and boards cats. We do not sell or breed them, so the kitten prices below are other people's asking prices, not ours. This is general information from a grooming and boarding team, not veterinary advice.

The spread is wide because "Maine Coon" covers everything from mixed kittens to imported show lines. Kittens under about RM1,000 are usually mixes or have no papers. If a breeder says a kitten is pedigree, ask to see the registration and the parents' HCM and hip results before you pay a deposit.
How big does a Maine Coon get?
The Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) calls the Maine Coon the largest of all pedigreed cats and the "gentle giant" of the cat fancy. A mature male can reach or exceed 20 pounds (about 9 kg), and females are usually smaller. CFA says the breed is slow to mature and can take up to three years to reach full growth, and that adults are larger than many small dogs.
Size matters for practical things. A Maine Coon needs a big litter box, a sturdy scratching post and a carrier made for large cats. Almost every adult is over the 5 kg line in our grooming price list, so we quote by weight.
Are Maine Coons good pets?
For most homes, yes. CFA describes them as getting along well with children and other animals, though both may be wary of the cat's size at first. Many are fond of water. CFA notes some watch a dripping tap, wash their toys or try to join you in the shower. That makes bath time easier for some Maine Coons than for most cats, though not all.
What health problems do Maine Coons have?
Two things are worth checking before you buy.
Heart disease (HCM). Maine Coons have their own form of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, caused by a change in the MYBPC3 gene called A31P.
- How common. Langford Vets at the University of Bristol estimates the gene is in about 26% of Maine Coons.
- One copy or two. The UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory says cats with two copies can develop moderate to severe heart disease and may die suddenly by about 4 years old. Cats with one copy usually live longer but can still develop HCM.
- What a test covers. The DNA test only finds this one gene. Other causes of HCM exist, so a clear result lowers the risk without removing it. Ask your vet whether a heart scan suits your cat.
Hip dysplasia. Large cats carry more weight on their hips. In the US Orthopedic Foundation for Animals registry, 24.9% of 2,708 Maine Coons screened had hip dysplasia, slightly more males than females. Breeders screen with hip X-rays. A cat that is stiff, reluctant to jump or sits awkwardly should see a vet.
Ask any breeder for both parents' results. Keeping your Maine Coon lean also takes pressure off its joints.
Does a Maine Coon shed a lot in Malaysia?
Yes, moderately. CFA describes a thick coat that is shorter at the shoulders and longer on the sides, belly and back legs, ending in a long plumed tail.
From the grooming table, this is what that means in a Malaysian home:
- Mats form low down. The short shoulder coat rarely tangles. The long coat on the belly, inner thighs and "britches" (the back of the hind legs) mats first, especially where the cat lies on it.
- Shedding all year. With warm days and air-conditioned rooms, most indoor Maine Coons we see shed steadily rather than in two seasons.
- Slow to dry. A thick coat on a big cat holds water. After a bath it must be dried right down to the skin, or it stays damp in our humidity.
If you see bald patches, broken hairs or red skin rather than an even shed, that is not normal shedding. See cat hair loss: shedding or a problem?
How often should you groom a Maine Coon?
CFA says breeders recommend combing two or three times a week to control shedding, prevent hairballs and stop mats, and each session need only take five to ten minutes. What works on this coat:
- A wide-and-fine steel comb. Start on the belly and back legs, then behind the ears and the ruff around the neck.
- Tail last, gently. The plumed tail is best combed lightly. Pulling it out with a brush leaves it thin.
- A professional groom every 6 to 8 weeks keeps the belly and britches clear and the loose coat under control. Our schedule by coat type is in how often should cats be groomed?
Should you shave a Maine Coon?
Not for the heat. A combed Maine Coon copes with indoor Malaysian conditions, and shaving exposes the skin and takes months to grow back.
A lion cut or a belly and sanitary clip does make sense for a Maine Coon that mats badly, an older or overweight cat that cannot groom its back end, or an owner who cannot comb two or three times a week. At PGH a lion cut starts from RM180. If mats are already tight against the skin, clipping them out is kinder than combing.
How much does PGH charge to groom a Maine Coon?
Almost every adult Maine Coon is over 5 kg, so we quote by weight. Send us your cat's weight and a photo of the coat on WhatsApp and we will reply with a price before you come in. A kitten under 2 kg is RM60 to 80, and a long-coated cat under 5 kg is RM100 to 130. The basic groom includes a massage bath, blow dry and full comb-out, nail trimming, ear cleaning, a sanitary shave and paw trimming. A lion cut starts from RM180. We never sedate, and a groom takes about two hours. Full prices are on the cat grooming page.
Going away? The cat hotel Presidential Room is 6 ft × 6 ft, RM60 a night, enough space for a large cat to stretch out.
