Cat fleas: how to get rid of them

If your cat scratches a lot, has scabs or thin fur near the base of the tail, or has black specks in its coat that turn red on a damp tissue, it has fleas. To get rid of them you need three things at once. First, a flea product labelled for cats, at the dose for your cat's weight, usually a monthly spot-on or tablet from a vet. Never use a dog product on a cat: some contain permethrin, which is toxic to cats. Second, treat every cat and dog in the house on the same day, because fleas move between pets. Third, clean the home: wash bedding in hot water and vacuum floors, sofas and car seats every few days. Most fleas live in the house as eggs, larvae and pupae, not on the cat. Pupae can stay dormant for weeks to months, so keep treating for 3 months. In Subang Jaya, PGH applies Advantage to cats at hotel check-in for RM25 to 35, by weight.

This is general information from a grooming and boarding team, not veterinary advice. If your cat is a kitten, elderly, pregnant or unwell, see a vet before using any flea product.

How do I know if my cat has fleas?

Cats groom so well that you often won't see a live flea. Look for the signs instead:

  • Scratching, biting or over-grooming, especially around the neck, back and base of the tail.
  • Scabs, redness or thin fur at the base of the tail. Some cats are allergic to flea saliva, and one bite is enough to make them itch for days.
  • Flea dirt: small black specks in the coat. Comb them onto a damp white tissue. A red-brown smear means digested blood, which means fleas.
  • Pale gums or low energy in a kitten or an old cat. A heavy flea load causes blood loss and anaemia. See a vet the same day.
  • Rice-like segments around the bottom or in the litter tray. Fleas carry tapeworm, and cats swallow them while grooming.

Run a fine-toothed flea comb from the neck to the tail over a white towel. That is the fastest home check.

Why does my indoor cat have fleas?

Fleas come in on people, other pets and visitors' shoes, or hatch from pupae already in the house or car. Adult fleas on the cat are only a small part of the problem. The eggs drop off into beds, carpets, sofa cushions and floor gaps, where they hatch into larvae and then pupae. In warm weather the whole cycle can take as little as two weeks, and Malaysia is warm all year.

This is also why cats often seem to "catch fleas" after a holiday or a stay away. Pupae wait in their cocoons while the house is empty, then hatch all at once when people and pets come home.

Which flea treatments are safe for cats?

Treatment What it does Lasts Use on cats?
Spot-on labelled for cats (for example Advantage for cats) Kills adult fleas on the cat About 1 month Yes, at the dose for the cat's weight
Oral flea tablet prescribed by a vet Kills adult fleas, some also stop eggs hatching 1 to 3 months Yes, from a vet
Flea shampoo or bath Kills fleas on the cat on the day A day or two Yes, only with a cat-labelled shampoo
Flea collar Varies by brand Varies Only cat-labelled collars; some cause skin reactions
Dog spot-on with permethrin (for example Advantix) Kills fleas and ticks on dogs About 1 month Never

Read the label before you buy. A product that says "for dogs only" can poison a cat, and so can a dog that was just treated with permethrin if your cat grooms or sleeps against it. Ask your vet or pharmacy which product suits your cat's age and weight. Products with an insect growth regulator stop eggs and larvae from developing, which shortens the battle.

How do I get rid of fleas in my house?

Treating the cat without treating the house is the most common reason fleas come back.

  1. Wash all pet bedding, blankets and throws in hot water. Replace bedding that can't be washed.
  2. Vacuum floors, rugs, sofas, under furniture and car seats every two to three days for the first month. Vibration makes pupae hatch so the new fleas meet the treatment. Empty the vacuum outside straight away.
  3. Spray if the problem is heavy. A household flea spray with an insect growth regulator, or a pest control company, reaches the floor gaps and skirting boards where larvae hide.
  4. Treat every pet in the house on the same day, dogs included, with the product made for each species.
  5. Keep going for 3 months. Vets advise 3 to 6 months of treatment for all pets after an infestation, because new fleas keep hatching from pupae.

How much does flea treatment cost in Malaysia?

The biggest cost is the monthly product, which depends on brand and your cat's weight. Ask your vet for a quote. Government veterinary clinics run by the Department of Veterinary Services charge subsidised fees for basic treatment. Our guide to government vet clinics in Selangor lists the district offices that serve Subang Jaya, Petaling Jaya, Klang and Kajang.

At PGH, flea, tick and mite prevention is compulsory for every hotel guest. If it is applied at check-in, Advantage for cats costs RM25 to 35 and Advantix for dogs RM38 to 48, by weight. Prices checked October 2026.

Can a cat with fleas go to the groomer or a pet hotel?

Treat the fleas first. A groomer or hotel has to protect every other pet in the building, and an active infestation can spread through shared rooms. PGH may decline a pet that arrives showing fleas, ticks or mites. Once your cat is on a cat-safe product and the fleas are gone, book as normal.

For hotel stays, see the cat hotel page and our vaccination rules for pet hotels. For grooming, see cat grooming. PGH is in USJ 21, Subang Jaya: how to get here.

Questions we get asked

How do I know if my cat has fleas?

Look for scratching or over-grooming, scabs or thin fur at the base of the tail, and black specks in the coat. Comb the specks onto damp white tissue. If they leave a red-brown smear, they are flea dirt, which is digested blood.

Can I use my dog's flea treatment on my cat?

No. Some dog products contain permethrin, which is toxic to cats and can cause tremors and seizures. Only use a product whose label says it is for cats, at the dose for your cat's weight.

Does a flea shampoo get rid of fleas?

A flea bath kills the fleas on your cat on the day, but it has little lasting effect. Most of the problem is eggs, larvae and pupae in your home, so you also need a monthly spot-on or oral product from your vet and a cleaned house.

How long does it take to get rid of fleas?

Expect two to three months. Flea pupae can stay dormant in a cocoon for weeks to months, so new fleas keep hatching after the first treatment. Vets advise treating every pet in the house for 3 to 6 months after an infestation.

Can a cat with fleas stay at a pet hotel?

At PGH, flea, tick and mite prevention is compulsory on check-in. Advantage is applied to cats for RM25 to 35, by weight. PGH may decline a pet that arrives with an active infestation, so treat fleas before the stay.
