British Shorthair in Malaysia: price, care
British Shorthair kitten prices in Malaysia, temperament, HCM, PKD and weight gain, and how a groomer brushes, bathes and handles the dense BSH coat in our heat.

A British Shorthair kitten in Malaysia costs about RM700 to RM1,500 from most sellers. On 20 October 2026, 47 priced kitten listings on Mudah.my ran from RM350 to RM3,500, with a median of RM900. Pedigree papers, rare colours such as golden, and the seller's reputation push the price to the top of that range. The British Shorthair, or BSH, is calm, quiet and affectionate, and slow to mature, reaching full size at about three years. Watch for three health issues: hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and weight gain. The coat is the densest of any breed but not a double coat, so it sheds steadily in Malaysian heat. Brush it weekly, more when shedding, and do not shave it. At PGH in USJ 21, Subang Jaya, a basic groom for a short-coated cat under 5 kg is RM90 to 110, and a kitten under 2 kg is RM60 to 80.
PGH grooms and boards cats. We do not sell or breed them, so the kitten prices below are other people's asking prices, not ours. This is general information from a grooming and boarding team, not veterinary advice.

The cheapest ads are often mixes or kittens without papers. The one listing that named WCF pedigree papers asked RM2,500. If a breeder says a kitten is pedigree, ask to see the registration and the parents' health test results before you pay a deposit.
Are British Shorthairs good pets?
For a calm home, yes. The Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) describes them as calm and quiet, interested in everything their owners do, and affectionate with the whole family rather than one person. A BSH usually waits to sit beside you instead of jumping into your lap. CFA also notes they are patient with children but do not like being carried around.
That last point matters on the grooming table. A BSH is heavy and solid, and it relaxes when all four feet are supported. We groom them on a non-slip mat, lift them with a hand under the chest and the back legs, and never dangle them. If your BSH hates being picked up at home, tell us when you book.
CFA says the breed takes about three years to reach full size, and males can reach about 17 pounds (7.7 kg). Most adult males are over the 5 kg line in our price list, which is why we quote by weight.
What health problems do British Shorthairs have?
CFA says the breed has no breed-specific health issues of concern. Vets still watch for three things.
Heart disease (HCM). Cornell's Feline Health Center lists the British Shorthair among breeds where hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is more common. Many cats with HCM look healthy. Signs, when they show, include fast or open-mouthed breathing and tiredness. A heart ultrasound (echocardiogram) is how vets diagnose it. Ask your vet whether a heart check suits your cat.
Kidney cysts (PKD). Langford Vets at the University of Bristol rates the British Shorthair at moderate risk of polycystic kidney disease, a problem linked to Persian ancestry. A DNA test on a cheek swab shows whether a cat carries the gene. Ask the breeder for the parents' PKD results.
Weight gain. An Australian study of British Shorthairs seen by vets from 2008 to 2017 found 48% were overweight, and desexed males were the heaviest. A BSH that is calm by nature and lives indoors needs measured meals and daily play. An overweight cat also struggles to clean its back end, which is when we see a dirty, matted rear at the salon.
Blood type. CFA notes many British Shorthair lines carry blood type B, which is less common in cats. Ask your vet to record it in case your cat ever needs a transfusion.
Does a British Shorthair shed a lot in Malaysia?
Yes, steadily. CFA says the coat has more hairs per square inch than any other breed, so some shedding is unavoidable. The breed standard describes it as short, very dense, firm to the touch and crisp, and specifically not a double coat or woolly.
From the grooming table, this is what that means in a Malaysian home:
- Loose hair packs into the coat. Because the coat is so dense, dead hair does not fall out cleanly. It sits in the coat until a comb or the cat's tongue removes it. Hairballs and fur on the sofa both come from that trapped hair.
- No winter, no break. Cats in cold countries grow a thicker coat for winter and drop it in spring. Here, with air-conditioned rooms and warm days, shedding tends to stay steady all year rather than come in two big waves.
- A dense coat dries slowly. After a bath it stays damp near the skin long after the top feels dry. A damp, dense coat in humid weather is uncomfortable for the cat, so drying it fully matters.
If you see bald patches, broken hairs or red skin rather than an even shed, that is not normal shedding. See cat hair loss: shedding or a problem?
How often should you brush a British Shorthair?
CFA says a quick weekly comb or brush is enough for most British Shorthairs. During heavy shedding, brush two or three times a week. What works on this coat:
- A medium-toothed metal comb, worked against the grain and then with it. The BSH coat stands up when you brush it backwards, which lets the comb reach the loose hair near the skin.
- A rubber grooming mitt for the finish. Most BSH tolerate it well, and it lifts surface hair.
- Short sessions. Five minutes while the cat is relaxed beats a long session it learns to hate.
Do not use a harsh deshedding blade every day on this coat. It can cut the healthy top coat and leave the coat looking flat.
Should you bathe a British Shorthair?
A healthy indoor BSH rarely needs a bath at home. CFA lists weekly brushing, claw clipping and an occasional ear clean as all the care most need. A bath helps when the coat feels greasy, the cat is shedding heavily, or an overweight cat cannot clean itself.
If you bath at home, use a cat shampoo, rinse until the water runs clear, and dry fully with a towel and a low, warm dryer. Do not leave a dense coat to air-dry in a humid room. At PGH a basic groom includes a bath with massage, a full blow dry and comb-out, nail trimming, ear cleaning, a sanitary shave and paw trimming. For most British Shorthairs, one every two to three months keeps shedding under control. Our full schedule is in how often should cats be groomed?
Should you shave a British Shorthair?
Generally no. We do not shave a healthy British Shorthair for heat or shedding. A short, brushed coat lets air reach the skin and protects it from the sun. Shaving exposes the skin, light-coloured cats can burn, any shave can nick or irritate the skin, and the coat takes months to grow back. Shaving does not stop shedding either. The cat still sheds, just shorter hairs.
The exceptions are a medical reason, such as a vet asking for a patch to be clipped, or a rare matted rear on an overweight cat, where we clip just that area. A lion cut is a long-coat service and does not suit this breed.
How much does PGH charge to groom a British Shorthair?
A basic groom for a short-coated cat under 5 kg is RM90 to 110, and a kitten under 2 kg is RM60 to 80. Most adult BSH males, and some females, are heavier than 5 kg, so send us your cat's weight and we will quote before you come in. We never sedate, and a groom takes about two hours. Full prices are on the cat grooming page, and how we compare with other salons is in cat grooming prices in Malaysia.
Send your cat's breed, weight and a photo of the coat on WhatsApp. PGH is inside Main Place Mall, USJ 21, Subang Jaya.
Questions we get asked
- How much is a British Shorthair kitten in Malaysia?
On 20 October 2026, 47 priced British Shorthair kitten listings on Mudah.my asked between RM350 and RM3,500. Half sat between RM700 and RM1,500, and the median was RM900. Pedigree papers, colour and the seller push the price up. PGH does not sell or breed cats.
- Should I shave my British Shorthair in Malaysia's heat?
Usually not. The coat is short and dense, and a brushed coat with the loose undercoat removed copes with indoor Malaysian conditions. Shaving exposes the skin to sun and the coat takes months to grow back. Shave only for a medical reason or on your vet's advice.
- How often should I brush a British Shorthair?
The Cat Fanciers' Association says a weekly comb or brush is enough for most British Shorthairs. When the cat is shedding heavily, brush two or three times a week with a metal comb so the loose hair comes out on the comb, not on your sofa.
- What health problems do British Shorthairs have?
The breed is generally robust, but Cornell lists it among breeds where hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is more common, Langford Vets rates it at moderate risk of polycystic kidney disease (PKD), and an Australian study found 48% of British Shorthairs seen by vets were overweight. Ask the breeder for PKD test results and keep your cat lean.
- How much does PGH charge to groom a British Shorthair?
A basic groom for a short-coated cat under 5 kg is RM90 to 110, and a kitten under 2 kg is RM60 to 80. Many adult British Shorthair males weigh more than 5 kg, so send us the weight and we will quote. The basic groom includes a massage bath, blow dry and full comb-out, nails, ears, sanitary shave and paw trim.
