Private room or cage-free pet boarding?
Private-room and cage-free pet boarding compared for Malaysian dogs and cats: stress, disease risk, supervision at night, prices in Subang Jaya, and which suits your pet.

Private-room boarding gives each pet its own enclosed space for the stay, with time out for play. Cage-free boarding lets pets share a larger space, from a playpen to a whole home. Neither is better for every pet. Cage-free suits confident, social dogs that already mix well with other dogs. A private room suits nervous, elderly or reactive dogs, dogs on medication, dogs that guard food, and almost every cat. International Cat Care advises that cats from different homes should never touch each other and should stay in individual units. In Subang Jaya, a private room at Pets Grooming Hotel (PGH) in USJ 21 costs RM50 per night for dogs and RM35 for cats, or RM80 and RM60 for a 6 ft by 6 ft Presidential Room. Cage-free home boarding at Swirly & Friends in SS17 is RM80 plus charges per dog per night. "Cage-free" is not regulated in Malaysia, so ask what it means wherever you book.
We run PGH, which uses private rooms, so weigh our view with that in mind. Swirly & Friends, which runs cage-free boarding, has written the other side, and we link to it under Sources.
What is the difference between a private room and cage-free boarding?
| Private room | Cage-free | |
|---|---|---|
| Where your pet sleeps | Its own room or suite | A shared space, playpen or home |
| Time with other pets | Supervised play sessions | Most of the day |
| Shared bowls, beds and toys | No | Often |
| Best for | Nervous, older or reactive dogs, dogs on medication, cats | Confident, social dogs |
| Price in Subang Jaya | PGH: dogs RM50–80, cats RM35–60 | Swirly & Friends: dogs RM80++ |
Prices checked October 2026, from each business's own website. "++" means tax or service charges are added.
A private room is not the same as a small wire cage. Ask for the room size. At PGH the Deluxe Room is 3 ft by 3 ft and the Presidential Room 6 ft by 6 ft, both air-conditioned and glass-fronted, with a bed and bowls. For a large dog or a stay of more than a few nights, the Presidential Room gives far more space.
Which suits a social, confident dog?
A dog that plays happily at the park, greets other dogs politely and settles in new places can enjoy cage-free boarding. It gets company and movement all day.
The risk is in the group. A good cage-free operator screens every dog first. Swirly & Friends, for example, asks for a paid trial day care before a first stay. If a place puts any dog with any other dog without a trial, choose somewhere else.
Which suits a nervous, older or reactive dog?
A dog that hides at the vet, guards its food, is recovering from illness or is simply old usually rests better in its own room. It can eat at its own pace, sleep without being disturbed, and come out for play when staff judge it is ready.
At PGH each dog has its own room and comes out for supervised play-zone time with suitable company. Rooms are cleaned and disinfected twice a day. A short day care visit before a long stay lets you see how your dog copes.
What about cats?
Cats are territorial and, unlike dogs, are not naturally sociable with cats they do not know. International Cat Care lists sharing litter trays, bowls and beds with unfamiliar cats as a major cause of stress. Its guide to boarding catteries says:
- cats from different households should never be able to touch each other
- communal runs and exercise areas should be avoided
- only bonded cats from the same home should share a unit
So for cats, "cage-free" should mean a larger private suite, not a shared room. Look for space to move, a high spot, a hiding place and a scratching post. International Cat Care suggests units of about 6 ft by 4 ft. PGH's cat Presidential Room is 6 ft by 6 ft. Two cats from the same home can share it. The cat hotel page shows the rooms.
Does boarding style affect disease risk?
Partly. The American Kennel Club notes that kennel cough spreads fastest where dogs are in close quarters and share water bowls, toys and bedding, including at boarding, daycare and grooming facilities. Private rooms remove the shared bowls and bedding, but any place where dogs meet carries some risk.
What protects your pet most, whichever style you choose:
- a vaccination record checked at check-in
- flea, tick and mite prevention for every guest
- cleaning and disinfection every day
- staff who isolate a coughing or sneezing pet straight away
PGH asks for at least one combination vaccine and applies flea, tick and mite prevention at check-in. Our vaccination guide explains the rules.
Who is with my pet at night?
Swirly & Friends makes a fair point here: ask every boarding place who is there after dark. A home where the carers live on site is different from a facility where staff go home at night.
At PGH the hotel is inside Main Place Mall, which has 24-hour security guards, and staff also monitor CCTV. Ask us, or anyone else, exactly how nights are covered before you book.
How do I choose?
- Watch how your pet behaves around unfamiliar animals at the vet or the park.
- Ask what "cage-free" or "room" means in square feet, and see it in person.
- Ask about the trial, vaccinations, flea control and night cover.
- For a nervous pet or a long trip, book a day care or one night first.
Our comparison of Subang Jaya pet hotels lists who offers which style, with prices. To book a room at PGH, see the dog hotel and cat hotel.
Questions we get asked
- Is cage-free boarding better for dogs?
For a confident, social dog that is used to other dogs, it can be. For a nervous, elderly or reactive dog, a dog on medication, or one that guards food, a private room with supervised play time is usually calmer. Neither style suits every dog.
- Is cage-free boarding good for cats?
Usually not, if it means sharing space with cats from other homes. International Cat Care advises that cats from different households should never touch each other and recommends individual units, with only bonded cats from the same home sharing.
- How much does each type cost in Subang Jaya?
At PGH a private room is RM50 per night for dogs and RM35 for cats, with 6 ft by 6 ft Presidential Rooms at RM80 and RM60. Swirly & Friends, a cage-free home in SS17, charges RM80 plus charges per dog per night. Prices checked October 2026.
- Is a 'cage-free' label regulated in Malaysia?
No. There is no official standard, so cage-free can mean anything from a shared playpen to a home where pets roam freely. Ask what it means at the place you are considering.
