The best cat litter in Malaysia is the one your cat will use reliably and that you can keep clean every day. Start with an unscented option in a tray large enough for the cat to turn around, then compare clumping, odour control, dust and tracking. Clay, tofu, wood, paper and silica products all have supporters, but cats can be particular about texture and smell. PGH currently carries cat litter among its shop supplies, including the products shown on the shelf in our pet-shop photos; exact brands, pack sizes, stock and prices change. If you are changing litter, mix the new type gradually and keep the old tray available until your cat is using the new one. Straining, crying, blood in urine or repeated trips to the tray needs urgent veterinary advice, not a different litter.
What should I look for in cat litter?
| Feature | Why it matters | What to check at home |
|---|---|---|
| Clumping | Makes urine easier to remove | Does it form a firm clump without sticking to the tray? |
| Low dust | More comfortable during pouring and digging | Does the bag create a visible cloud? |
| Unscented | Avoids adding a strong smell to a cat's toilet area | Will your cat accept the natural litter smell? |
| Low tracking | Less litter around the house | Does it stick to paws or scatter outside the tray? |
| Odour control | Helps in warm, humid homes | Does daily scooping still keep the tray fresh? |
No label feature replaces daily scooping. A premium litter left dirty will still smell, and a lower-cost litter kept clean can work very well.
Is clumping litter the best choice?
Clumping litter is popular because you can remove urine and faeces without emptying the whole tray every day. That makes it practical for busy owners and multi-cat households. Non-clumping litter can also work, especially if your cat prefers it or the product's absorbency suits your cleaning routine.
Do not flush litter unless the product specifically says it is suitable and local plumbing rules allow it. Put waste in a closed bag and wash your hands after cleaning the tray.
Which cat-litter material should I choose?
- Clay: widely available and often easy to scoop; some types create more dust or tracking.
- Tofu or other plant-based litter: can feel light and absorbent; check how well it clumps and whether your cat accepts the texture.
- Wood or paper: useful for owners who prefer a different material; absorbency and tracking vary by product.
- Silica: can control moisture well; some cats dislike the feel under their paws.
There is no need to choose a material because it is fashionable. Choose based on the cat, the tray, the cleaning schedule and what you can buy consistently.
How many litter trays does a cat need?
A common starting point is one tray per cat plus one extra, placed in quiet, accessible locations. A large cat needs a large tray, and a kitten should not have to climb over a high edge. Keep trays away from food and water, loud washing machines and places where another pet can block the exit.
If a previously reliable cat starts urinating outside the tray, arrange a veterinary check. Pain, urinary disease, constipation, stress and mobility problems can all change toilet behaviour.
How do I change my cat to a new litter?
Put the new litter in a second tray beside the familiar one. If your cat uses it, gradually increase the amount of new litter or replace the old tray after several days. Do not remove the only familiar toilet while the cat is still refusing the new texture.
Avoid heavily perfumed products when a cat is already avoiding the tray. Wash the tray with mild unscented soap, rinse it well and dry it before adding fresh litter.

Questions we get asked
- What is the best cat litter in Malaysia?
The best litter is one your cat accepts, controls odour in your home and can be cleaned safely. Many owners start with unscented clumping litter, then adjust for dust, tracking and the cat's preferences. Change gradually rather than replacing it without a transition.
- Is clumping litter better than non-clumping litter?
Neither is best for every home. Clumping litter makes daily removal easier, while non-clumping options can suit some cats and budgets. The important points are regular cleaning, enough litter boxes and whether your cat uses the tray comfortably.
- How often should cat litter be cleaned?
Remove urine clumps and faeces at least daily, top up as needed and wash the tray regularly with mild unscented soap. More frequent cleaning may be needed in a multi-cat home or Malaysia's warm, humid weather.
