Before a new puppy or kitten arrives in Malaysia, buy the essentials rather than a room full of accessories: species-appropriate growth food, bowls, a safe bed, toilet supplies, a correctly fitted collar or harness, a lead for a puppy, toys and simple grooming tools. Keep the first food the same as the breeder, shelter or foster home if possible, then change it gradually. A kitten needs a quiet litter tray away from food; a puppy needs a safe toilet routine and chewable toys. PGH's pet shop in Main Place Mall carries selected food, litter, bowls, beds, toys, clothes, collars, harnesses, leads and grooming essentials, but stock and prices change. This list is a starting point, not a substitute for a vet's advice on vaccines, parasites, nutrition or a pet that is unwell.
What should I buy before the puppy or kitten arrives?
| Essential | Puppy | Kitten | First check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Growth food | Puppy food for the expected size | Kitten food | Species and life-stage label |
| Bowls | Stable food and water bowls | Low, easy-to-reach bowls | Wash daily; keep water fresh |
| Toilet supplies | Pads or an outdoor toilet plan | Large, low-entry litter tray and litter | Keep away from food and water |
| Bed or safe space | Washable bed and a puppy-proof area | Quiet bed, hide and high resting option | Let the pet retreat without being disturbed |
| Walking and ID | Collar or harness, lead and ID tag | Breakaway collar only if needed | Check fit every few days while growing |
| Toys | Chew, tug and food-puzzle toys | Small chase and kicker toys | Remove damaged toys and strings |
| Grooming | Comb, nail clipper and puppy shampoo if needed | Soft brush and nail clipper | Start with short, calm sessions |
You do not need every item on day one. A safe environment, food, water, toilet setup and supervision matter more than matching accessories.
Which food should I buy first?
Ask what the puppy or kitten is eating now and buy a small amount of the same food first. A sudden change on the same day as a new home can create stomach upset and makes it hard to know what caused the problem.
Choose a complete food for growth. Use the feeding guide as a starting point and weigh portions as the pet grows. Treats should be small and should not replace meals. See our guides to best dog food in Malaysia and best cat food in Malaysia before comparing brands.
What toilet supplies does a kitten need?
Choose a litter tray that the kitten can enter easily, with a litter texture it already knows if possible. Put it somewhere quiet but easy to reach. Keep it away from food and water, scoop it regularly and add another tray if the kitten is avoiding the first one.
If the kitten repeatedly cries in the tray, strains, urinates outside it or has blood in its urine, contact a vet urgently. Do not treat a possible urinary problem as a litter-preference problem.
What does a puppy need for safe walks?
A puppy needs a correctly fitted collar or harness and a lead, but the timing of outdoor walks depends on its vaccination plan and your vet's advice. Ask the vet when it is safe to walk in public areas in your neighbourhood. Until then, provide safe enrichment at home and avoid unknown animal waste.
Check the fit every few days. You should be able to slide two fingers under a collar or harness without it being loose enough to slip over the head. Replace it as the puppy grows.
What grooming tools should I buy?
Keep it simple:
- A comb or soft brush appropriate for the coat.
- A nail clipper, introduced without forcing the pet.
- Species-appropriate shampoo only when bathing is needed; never use human shampoo as a default.
- A towel and a non-slip surface.
Touch the paws, ears and face gently for a few seconds at a time, then reward calm behaviour. Early handling makes future nail trims, vet visits and grooming easier. If a pet panics or bites, stop and ask a groomer or vet for help.
What should I avoid buying?
Avoid a food chosen only because the packaging says premium, a very strong scented litter, toys with loose strings that can be swallowed, collars that cannot release for kittens, unlabelled supplements and flea products meant for another species. Never give a dog flea product to a cat.
Do not buy antibiotics, sedatives or prescription diets without veterinary advice. A new pet's first week is for settling in and observing, not experimenting with a cupboard full of products.

Questions we get asked
- What do I need to buy for a new puppy or kitten?
Start with appropriate complete food, food and water bowls, a safe sleeping place, toilet supplies, an identification tag, a correctly fitted collar or harness, a lead for a puppy, toys and basic grooming tools. Add products gradually instead of buying every accessory at once.
- What food should I buy for a new puppy or kitten?
Choose food labelled for the correct species and growth stage. Ask the breeder, shelter or vet what the pet is eating now, and change gradually if you need to switch. A puppy or kitten that will not eat or has repeated diarrhoea needs veterinary advice.
- Does a kitten need a collar?
A collar is optional for some indoor kittens. If you use one, choose a correctly fitted breakaway collar, check it often as the kitten grows and do not attach anything heavy. Microchipping and secure doors are more reliable identification and safety measures.
