Golden Retriever in Malaysia: price, care

A Golden Retriever puppy in Malaysia costs about RM3,200 to RM4,000 from most sellers. On 21 October 2026, 237 priced listings on Mudah.my ran from RM1,299 to RM6,000, with a median of RM3,700. Registration papers, health-tested parents and the seller push the price to the top of that range. The Golden is a large, friendly gundog. The Kennel Club rates it as needing more than two hours of exercise a day and grooming more than once a week, and it sheds. Its double coat sheds steadily in Malaysian heat. Brush it two or three times a week and do not shave it. Before you buy, ask for the parents' hip, elbow and eye results. At PGH in USJ 21, Subang Jaya, a basic groom is RM160 and up for a 19 to 25 kg dog and RM200 and up over 25 kg, plus RM30 to 50 for the double coat.

Prices checked October 2026. Puppy prices are asking prices from 237 Mudah.my listings on 21 October 2026, not sale prices.

Many of those listings are pet shops posting the same litter several times, so the market is smaller than the count suggests. The cheapest ads are often older dogs or mixes. If a seller says a puppy is registered, ask for the papers and the parents' health test results before you pay a deposit.

Is a Golden Retriever a good family dog in Malaysia?

For an active family with space, yes. The Kennel Club describes gundogs as good companions whose temperament makes them all-round family dogs. It lists the Golden as a large breed that lives over 10 years and suits a large house and garden.

Two things catch Malaysian owners out:

  • Exercise in the heat. The Kennel Club says more than two hours a day. In Malaysia that means early morning and evening walks, not midday. A bored Golden chews.
  • Size. Most adult males we groom weigh over 25 kg. Many condos limit dog size, so check your building's pet rules before you commit.

What health problems do Golden Retrievers have?

The Kennel Club recommends that breeders test for these before breeding:

  • Hips and elbows. Hip and elbow dysplasia are joint problems that can cause limping and arthritis. Breeders X-ray the parents under the BVA/KC schemes.
  • Eyes. An eye exam, plus DNA tests for progressive retinal atrophy (GR_PRA2), an inherited eye disease that leads to blindness.
  • Skin. A DNA test for ichthyosis, which causes flaky, scaly skin.

Cancer. The Morris Animal Foundation has followed about 3,000 American Golden Retrievers since 2012. By July 2023 it had recorded more than 500 diagnoses of four major cancers: hemangiosarcoma, lymphoma, high-grade mast cell tumour and osteosarcoma. Lumps, sudden tiredness or pale gums are worth a vet visit. During a groom we feel the whole coat, and if we find a new lump we tell you.

Ask any breeder in Malaysia for the parents' results. A cheap puppy with no tested parents can cost far more in vet bills.

Does a Golden Retriever shed a lot in Malaysia?

Yes. The United Kennel Club standard describes a dense, water-repellent double coat: a firm outer coat over a soft undercoat, with feathering on the chest, the back of the legs and the tail.

From the grooming table, this is what that means in a Malaysian home:

  • Shedding all year. In cold countries a Golden drops its undercoat in spring and autumn. Here, with warm days and air-conditioned rooms, most shed steadily all year.
  • Loose undercoat stays in the coat. Dead undercoat packs down near the skin until it is brushed out. That is the hair you find on the floor, and left in, it traps heat and moisture.
  • Damp skin. A thick coat that stays wet after a swim or a bath can lead to hot spots, red, sore patches of skin. Dry the coat fully, down to the skin.

How often should you brush and groom a Golden Retriever?

The Kennel Club says more than once a week. What works on this coat:

  • A slicker brush and an undercoat rake two or three times a week, daily when hair is coming out in clumps. Work in sections down to the skin.
  • A metal comb behind the ears, under the legs and on the tail feathering, where knots form first.
  • A professional groom every 6 to 8 weeks with a deshed. Our full schedule by coat type is in how often should dogs be groomed?

Should you shave a Golden Retriever?

Generally no. We do not shave a healthy Golden for the heat. The undercoat sheds so air can reach the skin, and the outer coat shields the skin from sun. Shaving removes both. The skin can burn, and the coat can grow back patchy, with the soft undercoat coming in before the outer coat. The UKC standard also asks that trimming does not change the dog's natural outline. A tidy of the feet, ears and feathering is fine.

The exceptions are a vet's request, for example to clip a patch of infected skin, or a coat so matted that brushing it out would hurt the dog.

How much does PGH charge to groom a Golden Retriever?

A basic groom is RM160 and up for a dog of 19 to 25 kg, and RM200 and up for a dog over 25 kg. Most adult males are over 25 kg. Double coats add RM30 to 50, and deshedding is RM20 to 80, depending on how much undercoat comes out. A basic groom includes a bath with a shampoo matched to the coat, a blow dry and brush-out, nail trimming, ear cleaning, a sanitary and paw-pad tidy, and a face and feet tidy. Full prices are on the dog grooming page, and what each service includes is in dog grooming prices explained.

Questions we get asked

How much is a Golden Retriever puppy in Malaysia?

On 21 October 2026, 237 priced Golden Retriever listings on Mudah.my asked between RM1,299 and RM6,000. Half sat between RM3,200 and RM3,999, and the median was RM3,700. Many are pet shops posting the same litter more than once. PGH does not sell or breed dogs.

Should I shave my Golden Retriever in Malaysia's heat?

No. A Golden has a double coat. The undercoat sheds so air reaches the skin, and the outer coat shields the skin from sun. Shaving removes both and the coat can grow back patchy. Brush out the loose undercoat instead, and shave only for a medical reason or severe matting.

Do Golden Retrievers shed a lot?

Yes. The Kennel Club lists the breed as a shedder that needs grooming more than once a week. In Malaysia there is no winter coat to drop, so most Goldens shed steadily all year. Brush two or three times a week and daily when hair is coming out in clumps.

What health tests should a Golden Retriever breeder show me?

The Kennel Club recommends breeders test for hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, eye disease and the DNA tests for progressive retinal atrophy (GR_PRA2) and ichthyosis. Ask to see the results for both parents before you pay a deposit.
