How it works
- 1. Wellness check. A brief exam first. If extractions or gum treatment are needed, you are referred to your vet instead.
- 2. Hand scaling. The dentist holds your dog on his lap, talks to him, and removes tartar with hand tools only. 20 to 40 minutes.

This is a cosmetic clean of visible tartar for calm, hand-friendly dogs. It does not clean below the gum line and is not a substitute for a veterinary dental examination or treatment under anaesthesia.

Common questions
Is anaesthesia-free dental cleaning safe?
There is no sedation, and the dentist stops if the dog becomes distressed. But restraint can stress a dog, and hand scaling on an awake dog only cleans the visible tooth surface. It cannot reach below the gum line, where gum disease starts, or show hidden problems. Veterinary bodies including AAHA and WSAVA advise against anaesthesia-free dentistry for these reasons. Have your vet check your dog's mouth first, and at least once a year.
Which dogs are not suitable?
Dogs that are aggressive, very fearful, or that need extractions or treatment for gum disease. Every dog has a brief wellness check first, and anything beyond a routine clean is referred to your vet.
How long does it take?
About 20 to 40 minutes for the cleaning itself.
How often should it be done?
Ask your vet. Your dog's dental cleaning schedule should follow a vet check, and a veterinary dental under anaesthesia is the only way to clean below the gum line. Daily brushing at home makes the biggest difference.
Groomer or dentist, which should I choose?
A PGH groomer handles routine tartar removal on calm dogs with mild build-up, from RM150, and it can be added to a groom. The visiting animal dentist, from RM250, does a brief wellness check first and is the better choice for heavier build-up, older dogs, or if you want a professional opinion on the gums.
